The trial was carried out by Egypt's National Telecommunications Regulatory Authority in cooperation with Telecom Egypt and Huawei. It included the operation of the first mobile base station using the 6GHz band and the completion of the first data call over the frequency, marking a significant milestone for African telecommunications infrastructure.
A New Frontier for Mobile Connectivity
The 6GHz spectrum is considered one of the key frequency ranges being explored internationally to support high-capacity wireless communications, and its use for mobile services could provide additional network capacity and higher data rates, particularly in densely populated areas where existing networks face heavy traffic. The technology is expected to support the continued development of 5G networks and next-generation mobile communications, as well as data-intensive applications including artificial intelligence, the Internet of Things, virtual and augmented reality, and cloud computing.
The trial's achievement of 1.7 Gbps per user demonstrates the band's potential to deliver ultra-fast speeds, expand network capacity and improve service quality, particularly in areas with high traffic density. This capability makes the 6GHz band a promising solution for telecommunications operators looking to manage congestion in high-traffic areas and meet rising demand for mobile data.
Strategic Importance for Egypt's Digital Future
NTRA Executive President Mohamed Shamroukh said the 6GHz band is one of the strategic frequency ranges included in Egypt's long-term national spectrum plan for 2030–2035, which is currently being prepared. The plan aims to provide the spectrum resources required to keep pace with rapid developments in telecommunications technologies and ensure that Egypt's digital infrastructure is ready to accommodate next-generation applications.
Shamroukh described the successful trial as an important step in assessing the potential of the 6GHz band to support high-capacity mobile services. "Such success helps with advancing Egypt's goals in developing ICT infrastructure, enhancing the digital economy, and achieving the objectives of 2030 vision," he said.
The trial forms part of the NTRA's ongoing efforts to study and test cutting-edge global technologies while ensuring the optimal use of spectrum resources as a vital national asset. It also strengthens Egypt's readiness to adopt future technologies and reinforces its pioneering role in spectrum management across Africa.
A Milestone for African Telecommunications
Egypt's successful 6GHz trial is significant because it moves the country from spectrum planning into practical testing of a band that could become important for future mobile capacity. If adopted more widely for mobile use, upper 6GHz spectrum could provide operators with additional bandwidth in areas where existing mid-band networks face congestion.
For Egypt, early testing gives the regulator more evidence for future spectrum allocation decisions and helps prepare the market for the next stage of 5G evolution. The test also follows Egypt's commercial 5G launch in June 2025, when Telecom Egypt, Vodafone Egypt, Orange Egypt and e& Egypt secured 5G and related licenses valued at approximately $675 million.
The successful completion of the trial reflects Egypt's position in spectrum regulation and management in Africa, highlighting its cooperation with global industry partners and telecom operators to conduct advanced technical trials. Such trials are intended to support the development of Egypt's digital infrastructure, improve the efficiency of telecommunications networks and encourage innovation in the information and communications technology sector.
