The uncomfortable questions we were never taught to ask about Africa, geography and the truth
“This continent is the biggest continent in the world… All continents put together will fit into Africa.”
Former President Jacob Zuma, 2015. He was wrong. Asia is the world's largest continent, not Africa. And no, Africa cannot swallow every other continent like a geographical Pac-Man. But perhaps Zuma's mistake deserves more than laughter. If we can laugh at a president for getting geography wrong, can we also question the geography we were given? What else have we accepted simply because it was printed in a textbook, displayed on a classroom wall, stamped on a map or repeated by someone behind a podium? That is where the joke stops being funny.
And the questions begin. Maybe the map was never the territory. For generations, millions of children have grown up looking at the Mercator world map. Africa sits somewhere in the middle, looking respectable but strangely modest. Greenland looks enormous. Russia stretches across the top of the world as if it owns the place. And Africa? Africa appears to be politely minding its own business. Except there is a problem. Africa is not nearly as small as that picture makes it look. The Mercator projection was introduced by Gerardus Mercator in 1569, primarily for navigation. It was not designed to accurately compare the surface areas of continents. Because a spherical Earth has to be represented on a flat surface, areas become increasingly distorted towards the poles. In reality, Africa is about 14 times larger than Greenland. The map did not necessarily lie. But it did distort.
On 4 September 2026, the United Nations General Assembly adopted a resolution addressing distortions in commonly used world maps and encouraging consideration of equal-area projections. 164 countries voted in favour, one voted against and six abstained. Think about that. 457 years since Mercator's projection was introduced. Yet the Earth did not shrink because our map made Africa look smaller. Only our representation changed.
But let us be honest about Zuma
Zuma was wrong. Africa is the second-largest continent by land area, after Asia. His claim that all the other continents could fit inside Africa was also wrong. That matters. If we are asking humanity to question what it has been taught, we must be willing to question ourselves too. Otherwise, we are simply replacing one unquestioned narrative with another. How many things do we believe because they are true, and how many because nobody ever taught us to question them Perhaps we should look at Africa with fresh eyes. Not because everything we know about geography is wrong, but because geography is not merely lines on a page. It influences identity, politics, economics, resources, trade and migration. Let us talk about the borders. Look at a political map of Africa. Straight lines. Curves. Corners. Boundaries cutting across the continent as though somebody took a ruler and decided, “You take this side. I'll take that side.” Except these lines became countries, passports, customs posts and national identities. Many have their roots in the colonial era. The United Nations has noted that colonial-era borders often failed to reflect the social and cultural realities of African communities. So here is another question: If some of the lines separating Africans were drawn by people who were not Africans, what exactly are we looking at when we call those lines “natural”? This does not mean modern borders should simply be erased. It means we should understand their history. A border is not a mountain. A border is not a river. A border is not a biological law. A border is a human and political arrangement backed by law, institutions and power.
Then there is the oceans
Here is another geographical question: Where does Africa actually end? Africa is surrounded by the Atlantic Ocean, Indian Ocean and Mediterranean Sea, while the Red Sea separates much of northeastern Africa from the Arabian Peninsula. Beyond those waters lies fisheries, shipping, energy, trade and strategic resources. The African Development Bank says about 75% of African countries have access to the sea, creating enormous potential for a blue economy. So why do we talk endlessly about African land while treating African waters like the forgotten child at a family meeting? The ocean is not empty space. It is an economic frontier. Who maps the oceans? Who controls maritime boundaries? Who has access to the resources beneath them? How much do ordinary Africans know about the wealth surrounding the continent?
Now let us talk about what is underneath our feet
Africa is frequently described as a continent rich in natural resources. That is not mythology. According to the United Nations Environment Programme, Africa is home to approximately 30% of the world's mineral reserves, 40% of the world's gold and up to 90% of global chromium and platinum. It also holds major reserves of cobalt, diamonds, platinum and uranium.
Read those numbers again. Thirty percent. Forty percent. Ninety percent. These are not a few unlucky rocks hiding beneath the soil. And yet a continent can be rich in resources and poor in outcomes. Africa does not literally own all the wealth in the world, but it possesses extraordinary natural wealth that the world needs. If the treasure is beneath our feet, why are so many people standing on it struggling to survive?
Who turns Africa's wealth into wealth?
Perhaps we need to retire one particularly lazy sentence: “Africa is poor.” Poor in what? Resources? No. Potential? Certainly not. The problem may be that we have confused wealth with control of wealth. Having gold beneath your feet does not mean the gold automatically becomes your salary. Having cobalt underground does not mean you own the battery factory. A farmer can own fertile soil and still go hungry if someone else controls the market. The African Development Bank has emphasised local processing, industrialisation and stronger value chains so Africa captures more value from its resources. So perhaps the better question is not, “Does Africa have wealth?” We know it does. The question is: “Who turns Africa's wealth into wealth?”
If Africa is so rich, why are Africans leaving?
Now we arrive at the question that hurts. If Africa has so much natural wealth, why does a young African graduate sometimes look across the ocean and see opportunity while looking at home and seeing a locked door? People migrate for many reasons, including education, family, security and professional opportunities. But the employment gap is real. The World Bank says 10–12 million young people enter Africa's labour force each year, while only about 3 million formal wage jobs are created annually.
Behind that gap are millions carrying qualifications, ambitions and dreams. A degree can become a passport before it becomes a profession. And suddenly the question is no longer simply, “Why are Africans leaving Africa?” It becomes: “What would make them stay?”
The education system: where information becomes inheritance
Imagine a child sitting in a classroom. She learns the continents, borders and statistics. She memorises, passes the examination and years later teaches the same information to another child. Another generation inherits the knowledge. But what happens when part of that inheritance needs repairing? Does that make the grandmother stupid? No. It means the inheritance should have been examined. Education should not be a conveyor belt transporting information from one generation to another without inspection. Students should be taught how to investigate what they are told, not simply what to think. Today, a smartphone can place a government report, scientific paper, journalism, conspiracy theory and fabrication on the same screen. A photograph can be manipulated. A statistic can be technically correct but misleading. Artificial intelligence can produce writing that sounds like a professor and behaves like a confident liar. That is the danger of confident misinformation. Ignorance says, “I don't know.” Misinformation says, “I know.”
So what can we trust? The answer is verification. Who said it? What evidence supports it? What does the original source say? What has been left out? And perhaps the hardest question: Can I prove myself wrong? We build opinions like brick walls and then become offended when somebody arrives with a hammer. But truth should not be afraid of questions. Truth should survive them.
What does this mean for the old generation and the new?
For older generations, discovering that some familiar information was incomplete can be unsettling. But this does not mean everything they learned was useless. Nor should younger people mock them. Knowledge evolves. Maps change. Scientific understanding changes. Historical interpretations develop. Statistics are updated. Education should teach people how to update their understanding when better evidence becomes available. For the younger generation, the challenge is greater. They have more information than any generation before them, but access to information is not the same as access to truth. A rumour can outrun a newspaper. A sensational headline can cross borders before the facts have finished putting their shoes on. Perhaps the most important qualification of the future will not simply be a degree. It will be the ability to distinguish information from evidence.
Africa does not need another mythology
There is a temptation to swing from one extreme to another. Africa was often described through poverty, conflict, famine and instability. Today, there is a desire to tell a story of African strength, wealth and possibility. But Africa does not need a new mythology to replace an old one. It needs to be understood accurately. Africa can be extraordinarily wealthy and deeply unequal. It can have enormous mineral reserves and unemployment. It can possess vast maritime potential and underdeveloped ocean economies. It can carry the wounds of history and still have governments responsible for today's decisions. Two things can be true at the same time. That is what makes reality so irritating. Reality refuses to behave like a multiple-choice examination.
Perhaps Zuma's mistake was useful after all
Zuma was wrong. Asia is larger than Africa. But perhaps his mistake accidentally opened a door. Behind that door are questions about maps. Behind the maps are questions about borders. Beneath the soil are questions about minerals. Beyond the coastline are questions about oceans. Inside classrooms are questions about knowledge. And behind all of them sits one enormous question: What else have we accepted as reality simply because we were never taught to question it? Perhaps the answer is not that everything is false. Perhaps it is more uncomfortable: We have been looking at pieces of the truth and calling them the whole picture. A map can be useful and still distort. A statistic can be true and still mislead. A textbook can be valuable and still need updating. A political speech can contain facts and mistakes in the same breath. A continent can be rich in resources and poor in prosperity. And a person can be highly educated and still be wrong. That is not the death of knowledge. It is the beginning of critical thinking. Perhaps the lesson of Zuma's geographical blunder is that we should stop treating authority as a substitute for evidence. The classroom should teach us to question. The map should teach us to look closer. The statistic should make us ask for its source. History should make us ask whose voice is missing. Because the world is not a photograph. It is a moving picture. If we keep staring at the frame we were handed, we may never notice what has been cropped out.
The greatest threat to truth may not be that everyone is deliberately deceiving us. It may be that we have become too comfortable believing.
And perhaps that is the question every generation owes the next: “How do you know?”
