The attack, which took place on Friday, July 17, 2026, around 4:00 PM, targeted a Defence and Security Forces detachment on the Bankilaré-Téra axis, near the village of Doungouro. According to a statement from the Nigerien Ministry of Defence, 15 terrorists were killed in the response, five motorcycles were recovered and four others were destroyed.
The defence ministry reported that nine of the wounded soldiers sustained serious injuries and were evacuated to the military hospital. The ministry's statement said:
"The prompt response of the Defence and Security Forces, supported by aerial assets, forced the enemy to retreat. Search, sweep and security operations are continuing in the area".
The Tera department lies within the Tillabéri region, which forms part of the volatile "three borders" zone where Niger, Mali and Burkina Faso meet. Since 2017, this area has been a hotspot for armed groups, particularly the Al-Qaeda-affiliated Jamaat Nusrat al-Islam wal-Muslimin (JNIM).
The attack is part of a broader pattern of escalating violence across the Sahel region. Just a day earlier, at least 50 Malian soldiers were killed in an attack by Tuareg separatists and jihadists in the northern town of Anefis. Niger has faced repeated deadly attacks by jihadist groups for more than a decade. The military junta that seized power in July 2023 has struggled to contain the violence.
This latest attack follows an assault last June on Niamey International Airport that killed 11 soldiers and two civilians, which was claimed by JNIM. In January, the Islamic State in the Sahel claimed an attack on Diori Hamani International Airport.
The recurrence of these attacks underscores the immense challenge posed by armed groups in the Sahel region, where militants use border regions as a launchpad for operations. Nigerien authorities have implemented several security measures to limit the mobility and supply capabilities of armed groups, including restrictions on vehicle and motorcycle traffic on certain roads and the closure of rural markets.
