Senegal have appointed former Arsenal and France captain Patrick Vieira as their new head coach, tasking the 50-year-old with revitalising the Teranga Lions after a turbulent period that saw the dismissal of his predecessor following a disappointing World Cup campaign.
The Senegalese Football Federation announced on Tuesday that Vieira, who was born in Dakar but went on to win the World Cup with France as a player, would take charge of the national team. The appointment, ratified unanimously by the FSF's Emergency Committee, marks a new chapter for the West African giants as they look to the future after a rollercoaster year.
A Return to His Roots
Vieira's appointment represents a symbolic homecoming. Born in the Senegalese capital in 1976, he moved to France at the age of eight and went on to enjoy a glittering playing career, winning 107 caps for Les Bleus and lifting the World Cup in 1998 and the European Championship in 2000.

But he has never severed ties with the country of his birth. One of his most significant contributions came towards the end of his playing career when he made a major investment in the Diambars Institute, which has become one of Africa's leading football academies and produced players including Idrissa Gana Gueye, Bamba Dieng and Abdoulaye Seck.
Vieira's connection with Senegal carries a deeply symbolic significance, with his appointment described as a "long-awaited homecoming."
The Challenge Ahead
Vieira replaces Pape Thiaw, who was sacked following Senegal's dramatic last-32 exit at the 2026 World Cup against Belgium, where they squandered a 2-0 lead to lose 3-2 after extra time. Thiaw had been in charge since 2024 and led Senegal to a disputed Africa Cup of Nations title earlier this year, which was later overturned by CAF following a controversy over his decision to take his players off the pitch in protest at a refereeing decision.
The Senegalese Football Federation has described Vieira's appointment as a "strategic move" aimed at "establishing a high-level technical staff, in line with our country's sporting ambitions."
His first matches in charge are expected to come in next month's international window as Senegal begin their qualifying campaign for the 2027 Africa Cup of Nations. The Teranga Lions have been drawn alongside Mozambique, Sudan and Ethiopia in their qualifying group.
Patrick Vieira amassed a glittering list of honours as a player but has found similar success hard to come by as a manager.
A Mixed Managerial Record
Vieira's coaching career has not yet matched the heights of his playing days. He began his managerial career with New York City FC before coaching French clubs Nice and Strasbourg, as well as Premier League side Crystal Palace. His most recent role was with Italian club Genoa, where he departed in November 2025 with the team at the foot of Serie A.
Despite his relatively modest coaching record, the FSF believes he is the right man to lead a talented Senegal squad that includes established stars such as Sadio Mane and promising young talent.
Lingering Uncertainty
Vieira's appointment comes at a difficult time for the Senegalese Football Federation, which is facing off-field challenges. According to the BBC, the new coach has not yet signed a contract, and discussions regarding "administrative and contractual arrangements" are continuing. Thiaw is also demanding the payment of several months of outstanding wages and bonuses, reportedly totalling almost $815,000.
Additionally, a ruling on the election of the current FSF leadership is expected from the Court of Arbitration for Sport by Friday, which could call into question the legitimacy of the federation's hierarchy and potentially even the choice of Vieira as head coach.
