The rollout of 5G networks is accelerating across Africa, promising faster connectivity and new opportunities for digital innovation. South Africa, Nigeria, Kenya, and Ghana are among the countries leading the deployment of this transformative technology.
"5G will enable a new generation of digital services," said Dr. Cosmas Zavazava, Director of the Telecommunication Development Bureau at the ITU. "It will support applications in manufacturing, healthcare, education, and many other sectors."
The technology is expected to enable new services in sectors such as manufacturing, transportation, and healthcare. Higher speeds and lower latency will support applications like autonomous vehicles, smart factories, and remote surgery.
Network operators are investing heavily in infrastructure, while governments are creating regulatory frameworks to support the technology. The full potential of 5G is expected to be realized in the coming years, with significant economic impact projected.
